Remote Area First Aid
With Scouting and Guiding having many activities in remote areas, this course is particularly appropriate for
members of Venturer-age and over. It covers the extra things to be considered with prolonged care in the bush,
where an ambulance will not arrive within a short period of time, if it can reach your location at all.
The 'Remote Area' description should not be taken as limiting its scope. This course covers all those situations
where medical help may be delayed. That may include a Venturers' expedition in the Blue Mountains, or simply a
walk in Ku-ring-gai Chase.
Remember that Remote Area First Aid covers all those situations where ambulance assistance would be more than
15 or 20 minutes away, and doesn't that include the majority of Scouting and Guiding activities?
For a listing of the scope of the Remote Area First Aid course, see the
St John web site.
We are only able to offer the Remote Area First Aid course to members of Scouts Australia and Girl Guides
Australia. (See the Member Prices entry on the
First Aid Classes page for eligibility.)
St John has changed from the no prerequisites 3-day Remote Area First Aid Course leading to both the Remote Area
First Aid and the Apply First Aid* ('HLTFA301B - Apply First Aid') qualifications.
From January 2010, Remote Area First Aid has become a two-day remote-only course leading to the the
Remote Area First Aid ('HLTFA302A - Apply First Aid in a remote situation') qualification. It no longer
covers the Apply First Aid* scope as well, and does not lead to the gaining or renewal of a Apply First Aid*
qualification.
Note: (*) Apply First Aid was previously called Senior First Aid.
Because we anticipate that many will want to requalify in Apply First Aid at much the same time – the Apply First Aid will
need to be current to renew the Remote next time – we have scheduled a Apply First Aid Recertification class
shortly before each Remote Area First Aid class. Those who want to renew both qualifications will now need
to enrol in the two classes separately.
Special course fees apply to the Remote Area First Aid course for those with existing
St John Apply First Aid qualifications, with extra reductions for those who undertake our
closely linked Apply and Remote courses. See Fees.
Please justify your entitlement to the special course fee before the closing date of the course.
It is difficult to make changes after the Class Rolls and receipts have been completed.
Prerequisite:
Candidates must have a current Apply First Aid ('HLTFA301B - Apply First Aid') or higher qualification.
If you have qualified in Apply First Aid at one of our previous classes, we should have a record of your existing
qualification, and no further proof will be necessary. If not, please check that your previous qualification is at
the required level, and send a photocopy of your certificate with your booking form.
The assessment is at the last meeting of the Remote Area First Aid class, so the previous Apply First Aid
qualification should be current until then.
