Course Name Change
The course previously known as 'Senior First Aid' has
been renamed 'Apply First Aid' by St John
Ambulance. For some time, the National competency gained at the Senior First Aid course has been 'HLTFA301B - Apply First Aid'.
The new name aligns with the competency achieved.
Apply First Aid — One Day (AP1)
The Apply First Aid — One Day course is an intensive course covering the full scope of Apply First Aid
by touching on each of the topics briefly and practising the skills. This nationally approved course leads to the
'HLTFA301B - Apply First Aid' qualification, valid for three years.
e-Learning
If you are not confident of your First Aid knowledge and skills by having done an equivalent level course
in the previous few years, we suggest you do some private study via the internet at the
St John Ambulance e-Learning site
so that on the one-day course you can be assessed as competent in Apply First Aid (in CPR, casualty management and first aid
theory — see Assessments).
____________________
For a listing of the scope of the Apply First Aid — One Day (AP1) course, see the
St John web site. Option 1 there is the
Apply First Aid — Two Days (AP2) course, and options 2 and 3 involve this
Apply First Aid — One Day (AP1) course, with and without e-Learning.
Prerequisites:
Other than the age-related considerations – see the
First Aid Classes page and the
Apply First Aid – Two Days page, there is no requirement to have
previously gained an Apply First Aid qualification ('HLTFA301B - Apply First Aid').
However, covering the whole Apply First Aid syllabus (normally taking two days) in just one day means a very intensive course,
and many find there is insufficient practice in casualty management to become confident in using their skills as first aiders.
If you haven't previously gained a Apply First Aid qualification or equivalent, we would recommend that unless you are a very
confident person, or have some background knowledge of First Aid, that you undertake the
two day Apply First Aid course as your first First Aid training.
So AP1 candidates are advised to
– have a current Apply First Aid or higher qualification, or
– undertake private study at the
St John Ambulance e-Learning web site to an equivalent standard.
Linking with Remote Area First Aid ...
Remote Area First Aid is a remote-only course of two-days duration with Apply First Aid as a prerequisite. (See the
Remote Area First Aid page.) Because we anticipate that many will want to
requalify in Apply First Aid at much the same time as gaining or renewing their Remote qualification – the Apply First Aid will
need to be current to renew the Remote next time – we have scheduled an AP1 class shortly before each Remote Area First
Aid class. Those who want to renew both qualifications will need to enrol in the two classes separately.
