Advanced First Aid
Advanced First Aid is a three-day course of three separate modules extending on the knowledge and skills involved in the
Apply First Aid course:
– Apply First Aid
– Advanced Life Support (see below)
– Advanced First Aid
The Advanced First Aid module explores the following subjects in greater detail:
– trauma management
– lifting and moving a casualty
– first aid records
– multiple injuries
– multiple casualties (triage)
– first aid team work
– drug and alcohol abuse, and
– treating emotionally disturbed casualties.
For further information, see the 'First Aid Classes' page and the
St John web site.
With success at the Advanced First Aid course, the candidate gains the Advanced First Aid qualification and renews the Apply
First Aid qualification, both for three years, and gains qualifications in the Advanced Life Support components, each valid for
one year.
Prerequisite:
A current Apply First Aid* ('HLTFA301B - Apply First Aid') or higher qualification is required. The minimum age for the
analgesic gases component is 18 years. Younger folk may attend but they will not be awarded the Administration of Analgesic
Gases qualification.
Note: (*) Apply First Aid was previously called Senior First Aid.
Advanced Life Support
Advanced Life Support covers what were previously three separate items:
Advanced Resuscitation
Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation is taken to an advanced level, involving the use of various masks to reduce the possibility of
infection, and air bags, two-person CPR and oxygen delivery apparatus to enable CPR to be performed more effectively and for
longer.
Automatic External Defibrillation
How to use a defibrillator, the last 'D' of the St John 'DRSABCD Action Plan', a most important step in the Chain of Survival
of a casualty with respiratory collapse.
Analgesic Gas Administration
The use of analgesic gas by a first aider in assisting a casualty in severe pain. The uses and contraindications to the use of
methoxyfluorane is dealt with. Gaining this accreditation is restricted to candidates over eighteen years of age. Younger people
can attend the course for interest, but are awarded the Advanced Resuscitation rather than the Advanced Life Support qualification.
The Advanced Life Support and Advanced Resuscitation certificates are valid for one year.
Please contact the First Aid Chairman for information on the Advanced Life Support course.
